First Nations, with support from local environmentalists, first blockaded on Meares Island in Clayoquot Sound in the mid 80's. A series of blockades followed throughout Clayoquot Sound, culminating in 1993 wuth the largest civil disobedience action in Canadian history. Almost 1000 people were arrested, charged with criminal contempt, and sentenced up to three months in prison.
