Salt Lake Evaporation Pond #1. Great Salt Lake Utah, USA 2012.  Salt evaporation pond clusters adjacent to Great Salt Lake in Utah. Water from the Great Salt Lake is pumped into the desert flats that border the lake and when this water evaporates, salt, potassium, calcium and other minerals, are left behind. The colors of the ponds result from both the variations in salinity and from the algae content. While these operations are not polluting in themselves, there are concerns around both the amount of water withdrawn from the lake as well as potential loss of habitat for shorebirds.
